Senior Designer

Location: San Diego Division

Pay Scale: $40-$60 Per Hour

Job Description​

As a Senior Designer at WCEP, a typical day will consist of reviewing scope, preparing plans for complex overhead and underground electric designs, creating material reports, and coordinating multiple facets of the project like: environmental, permitting, land acquisition, fusing requests, etc. A vital component to this position is having the ability to work and prioritize several complex projects simultaneously. Ideally the candidate is available to represent the company in the field on an as needed basis making design decisions for structure placement, trench locations, while talking with customers as needed. The candidate must have exceptional computer and communication skills that allow for successful outcomes in a team environment.

 

  • Location: Remote work environment is available. Ideal candidate lives in or interested in relocating to near San Diego (Temecula, South Orange County, etc.) to participate in fielding aspects of the job. We have a small office presence in Carlsbad, CA that can be used occasionally or as needed.

  • Equipment: WCEP will provide all equipment necessary to complete the job; laptop, monitors, keyboard, general safety equipment. Candidate must provide their own personal PPE; boots, pants, and no-logo T-Shirt.

  • Personal Owned Vehicle: Candidate is required have a personal owned vehicle that can be used to drive to field locations. Compensation will be offered to off-set costs for vehicle usage.

 

Job Requirements â€‹

  • Team oriented individual that is interested in working with a highly motivated team.

  • Highly self-motivated and self-starting. Able to complete tasks independently with minimal direction once fully trained.

  • Oversees all aspects of assigned distribution jobs including environmental submittals, land rights, permitting, FAA submittals, fusing submittals, etc.  

  • Complete fielding and job walks safely according to WCEP standards and utility fielding guidelines.

  • Available to represent the company in the field on an as needed basis making design decisions for structure placement, trench locations, while talking with customers as needed.

  • Pass the appropriate SDG&E tests related to your program to become a Qualified Designer (overhead, underground, and gas). Applicants who are already fully qualified are preferred (tests must be passed)

  • Complete jobs in adherence to and stay current on utility standards and program preference guides.

  • Understand and apply engineering deliverables into designs (as applicable).

  • Flag any issues or questions you see while designing a job and create possible solutions. 

  • Communicate with team lead regarding scope changes on all assigned jobs for possible cost changes.

  • Communicate with appropriate external clients as needed/requested (engineers, fusing team, environmental department, etc.).

  • Update trackers or work with project coordinator to update trackers for assigned jobs as tasks and stages are completed. Keep notes for jobs up to date.

  • Plan daily with team lead regarding job and task priorities.

  • Discuss scheduling issues, delays, early completion with team lead early and often. This will ensure team lead can prepare more work or properly communicate delays/issues with the client.

  • Work with QC and program coordinator (if applicable) to ensure deliverables are submitted properly and completed on time.

  • Prompt and accurate email, teams, and phone responses with internal and external teams.

  • Track time daily and fill out time sheets accurately. Communicate time off appropriately with team lead.

  • Ability to learn and use Bluebeam Revu, GIS/SPARC, iCUE, PIDS and other SDG&E standards and tools.

  • Ability to drive personal vehicle and possess a valid Driver’s License, current registration, and insurance.

  • Ability to lift to 50lbs, be in the field for 8-12hrs at a time and stand or sit for long periods of time.

  • Be a part of team building events, company Teams threads, and engaged with your team.

Qualifications & Prerequisites​

  • High School Diploma Required. College Degree is a plus but not required.

  • 5+ years of utility experience planning and designing electric and/or gas facilities and infrastructure. 

  • Extensive knowledge of overhead and underground fielding safety and techniques.

  • Extensive experience with complex overhead and underground electric distribution design jobs such as 412kV cutovers, mobile home park conversions, electric vehicle charger installations, and/or overhead to underground conversions.

  • Extensive experience working with survey grade base maps. Drafting experience is a plus.

  • Extensive experience reviewing engineering deliverables

  • Capable of managing multiple jobs, delivering jobs according to due dates, and communicating both internally and externally regarding job details (with other designers, leads, engineers, etc.)

  • Eagerness to learn and contribute to the team’s success is a must, while working collaboratively with all stakeholders.

  • Computer savvy and able to navigate multiple programs at once.  

  • Experience with material entry programs is a plus.

  • Ability to solve problems and overcome challenges with a positive mindset.

  • Proven ability to communicate through all channels regarding workload, questions, and personal time.
